Modelling and simulation is a critical element in the design, development and evaluation of self-organising and cooperative networks. In this paper, we investigate issues concerning wireless sensor networks and mobile ad hoc networks design based on simulation. We survey approaches to wireless transmission and nodes mobility modelling, and describe a novel algorithm for calculating a collision-free motion trajectory for a mobile device in unknown environment. Finally, we describe the design, performance and potential applications of our software platform for parallel and distributed simulation, and computer-aided design of self-organising networks.
